Tiger

Drawn from the carpet’s loom master. The flames and clouds settle, the face comes, and the eyes brighten last.

Why the tiger

009 · Tiger — the first animal in the Archive. Not a symbol of power. A symbol of presence.

The founder’s words, 27 September 2026

What it is

A round sit seat: a tiger’s face, full front, eyes open, staring straight at the one who sits. Orange, cream and black stripes, a red stripe down the nose, the white muzzle, the pink nose, the whiskers drawn in fine cream thread. Around the face, dark clouds and gold and cream flames on a crimson field, closed by a thin dark rim. The eyes are the whole carpet — two points of light in a field of fire.

Fourteen silk colours, as the loom master shows them:

Now it waits for its master.

Why it is a masterpiece

Every carpet before it asks the eye to find a point, a curve, a wave. The tiger asks the eye to be found. You sit down and the tiger is already looking at you — not threatening, not friendly, just there. That is the teaching: awareness doesn’t wait for you to arrive. It was watching before you sat.

The geometry

The face is built on a triangle — the muzzle narrows to the nose, the eyes sit at the two upper corners, the ears at the top. Three points, one gaze. The stripes radiate outward from the center like the Sri Yantra’s triangles, but they don’t point inward. They point at you. The geometry is reversed: instead of you entering the carpet, the carpet enters you.

How to sit with this carpet

The mantra is traditional: the seed syllable of fire, at Manipura. It is not Khard Hridaya’s own.

Ram.One syllable. The fire seed.

Not a plea — a recognition. The chest saying: I am not the prey. I am the one who sees.

In the Sat-Cakra-Nirupana (Purnananda, 1577), the ten-petalled Manipura lotus at the navel holds the triangular region of Fire, “shining like the rising sun”, and within it “the Bija of Vahni himself”, which the commentary names: “Ram, the Bija of Fire” (verse 19, in Arthur Avalon’s translation, The Serpent Power).

The sit. A hundred breaths. Gaze into the tiger’s eyes, not a stare — a meeting. On the inhale: ram — the fire rises. On the exhale: zero grip — the gaze holds. When the count finishes, let the syllable go. Stay in the quiet between the last sound and the next thought. That is the door.

The sequence. 001 stood. 002 circled. 003 opened. 004 pointed. 005 touched the ground. 006 went under. 007 spoke in code. 008 ignited. 009 looks back.

Pain is information. Drowsiness is information. Either means soften, open the eyes, or stand. The carpet does not demand — it invites, and it waits.

The tiger

The tiger is India’s national animal.

In Hindu art, the goddess Durga is usually shown riding a lion or a tiger. Shiva is often shown wearing or sitting on a tiger hide, and often in meditation, in his Himalayan home on Mount Kailash.

At the beginning of the twentieth century there were about 100,000 wild tigers, by WWF’s estimate. The Global Tiger Forum put the number at about 5,574 in 2023, and WWF gives about 5,711 in 2025: a drop of around 95 percent. India alone has about 3,682, the Government of India’s estimate for 2022, or about two-thirds of the Global Tiger Forum’s total.
