Why the Big Bang
008 · Big Bang — the universe’s first breath.
What it is
Violet ring, gold dust, a blinding pale-gold center. Fine gold rays burst from the center, gold veins run through the violet, and beyond the ring of gold dust, gold stars scatter across a black field to a gold rope rim. Round, one point five meters, one hundred fifty-knot mulberry silk.
Twelve silk colours, as the loom master shows them:
- Void Black
- Deep Umber
- Deep Violet
- Dark Bronze
- Royal Violet
- Bronze Dust
- Lavender Haze
- Antique Gold
- Old Gold
- Temple Gold
- Bright Gold
- Star Light
Now it waits for its master.
Why it is a masterpiece
Every carpet before it gives the eye something to find — a point, a curve, a wave. This one gives the eye something it cannot hold. The center is too bright to look at directly, so the gaze keeps circling the violet ring, and the circling is the practice. That is the Big Bang as a sit seat: not an explosion you watch, but a radiance you orbit. The gold dust is the first matter settling out of pure light. The violet ring is the boundary where light becomes form. Sit in the middle and you are at the origin — before there was a wave, before there was a fold, before there was a mountain.
The geometry
A blinding center that recedes the harder you look. The violet ring advances. The gold dust drifts around them both like the first dust of creation. No bindu to rest on — the bindu is the thing that blinds you. That is the whole teaching: the origin is not a point you land on. It is a light you learn to sit inside without flinching.
How to sit with this carpet
The mantra is traditional: the seed syllable of space, at Vishuddha, the throat centre. It is not Khard Hridaya’s own.
Ham.One syllable. The space seed.
Not a plea — a recognition. The chest saying: I am not the dust. I am the light the dust is made of.
In the Sat-Cakra-Nirupana (Purnananda, 1577), the lotus in the throat, Vishuddha, is “of a smoky purple hue”, and in it is “the Ethereal Region, circular in shape, and white like the full Moon”. There sits the seed of the ether, which the commentary names: “the Bija of Ether or Ham” (verses 28 and 29, in Arthur Avalon’s translation, The Serpent Power).
The sit. A hundred breaths. Gaze at the violet ring, not the center — the center will find you. On the inhale: ham — the light expands. On the exhale: zero grip — the dust settles. When the count finishes, let the syllable go. Stay in the quiet between the last sound and the next thought. That is the door.
The sequence. 001 stood. 002 circled. 003 opened. 004 pointed. 005 touched the ground. 006 went under. 007 spoke in code. 008 ignites.
Pain is information. Drowsiness is information. Either means soften, open the eyes, or stand. The carpet does not demand — it invites, and it waits.
The Big Bang
By the final measure of Planck, a space telescope of the European Space Agency, published in 2018, the universe is about 13.8 billion years old.
In 1931 a Belgian cosmologist and Catholic priest, Georges Lemaître, wrote in a short letter to Nature: “We could conceive the beginning of the universe in the form of a unique atom.” Later he called it the primeval atom, and he spoke of fireworks. He knew the picture was not quite right: fireworks burst into the space around them, and there was no space for his atom to burst into.
The name came from a doubter. On 28 March 1949, in a talk on BBC radio, Fred Hoyle, who backed a rival theory, described the idea that all the matter of the universe “was created in one big bang at a particular time in the remote past”. He could not accept it. The name stayed.
At Bell Telephone Laboratories in Holmdel, New Jersey, Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson found a faint microwave radiation coming from space, the same in every direction. They made no suggestion about where it came from. Others read it as fossil light from the big bang, and in 1978 the two shared half of the Nobel Prize in Physics for the discovery. Planck later mapped that same light, imprinted on the sky when the universe was only about 380,000 years old.
Science does not place the big bang at one point. “The Big Bang took place everywhere in space, not at a particular point in space,” as the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics puts it. The bright centre of this carpet is an image of the beginning, not a map of it.
Long before telescopes, a hymn of the Rigveda asked the same question and left it open: “Who knows then whence it first came into being? … Whose eye controls this world in highest heaven, he verily knows it, or perhaps he knows not.” Khard Hridaya sets the hymn beside the science as a parallel. It does not claim that one foretold the other.
The drawing
Before a renumbering, the number 008 belonged to Tara Code, which became carpet 007.
The Big Bang’s first loom drawing was traced on 25 September 2026 from the picture of the carpet on the Khard Hridaya website. That picture showed only about three quarters of the round, so the missing sides were left plain black. The same day, with the founder’s go-ahead in principle, the carpet was drawn again as one flat, round design, made with an image-generation tool to match the picture and chosen from four candidates. The traced drawing is kept as history. The new one is the loom master:
- A pale-gold core in a glow of gold and bronze, with 88 fine gold rays.
- A ring of violet smoke in three violets, with gold veins running through it.
- A ring of gold dust, and gold stars scattered on black.
- A gold rope rim with 268 twists.
The founder approved the drawing on 27 September 2026.
